The Blue Food Centre Wieringen continues to play a key role in shaping the future of sustainable fishing in the region of Den Oever.

With growing challenges in the fishing industry such as rising fuel costs and changing regulations, the center is helping local fishermen adapt by promoting smaller-scale, sustainable fishing methods and better use of local catch.

Instead of relying only on traditional large-scale fishing, the initiative encourages fishermen to diversify into species like crab, shellfish, and underused North Sea fish. These products are now gaining value through direct sales at the Blue Food Markthal.

The approach also strengthens the local economy by reducing intermediaries and ensuring that more value stays within the fishing community.

The initiative highlights a shift toward responsible fishing practices while keeping the maritime heritage of the region alive for future generations.
